Genesis 3:20, Then Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all people everywhere.
3:21, And the LORD God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife.
First observance in verse 20, this is the second time Adam has named his wife. (when her role was helpmate.)
Genesis 2:23 Then the man said, “At last this is bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh She shall be called woman” Because she was taken out of man. Genesis 2:25 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
The first time Adam named his wife woman because of what he experienced “bone of my bones”
The second time is because of his understanding of what God had said about her. (her role as life bearer)
Lesson: God was there with them, Adam named Eve in believing what God had just said to the woman.
What does the name Eve mean?
3:20, Eve in Hebrew is Chavvah=living life, living, life giver. Identifying her as the “mother of all living”
Interestingly:
Eve in Greek is Zoe, some debate as to life or life-producer. Specifically referring to the divine, eternal, of God-kind of life in the New Testament. It signifies life in its most profound, active, and abundant sense not merely the existence of biological life, but the essence of living and eternal vitality.
Zoe refers to the spiritual, eternal life. In contrast to other Greek words for life, in the new testament which are.
Bios refers to the physical biological aspects of life.
Psuche, Refers to the soul, consciousness or inner self.
Biblical meaning: mother of all humanity.
Eve is only mentioned 4 times in the entire bible. 2 Corinthians 11:3 where Pauls says “But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his trickery your minds will be led astray from sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”
1 Timothy 2:13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.
In keeping this verse in context: we carefully observe what happened before Adam named Eve.
Right after the serpent was cursed by God, Eve was given her consequences for her sin, then Adam was given his consequences for his sin.
Interestingly: Adams statement, A statement of Faith, “because she was the mother of all the living.
Lesson: Adam trusted and believed what God said. Eve was named according to her future.
Adam named her by her purpose not her sin.
Adam names his wife. Adam was fully aware of the curse pronounced by God to the serpent. “And of your offspring and her Descendant:”
It appears that Adams focus changed from accusation, to seeing his wife’s value. The bearer of life. Of all humanity.
Adam was just issued his consequences for his sin, the verse directly prior to the naming Eve.
Genesis 3:19, All your life you will sweat to produce food, until your dying day. Then you will return to the ground from which you came. For you were made from dust, and to the dust you will return.
Adam was literally given the first death sentence.
Lesson: We are all sentenced to die. Yet Adam appears by context not to be focused on his consequence. Because after the fall Adam names his wife Chavvah=Eve/life
Lesson: Like Adam we should not focus on death, but on who currently provides eternal life for us, that is Jesus Christ.
Elliots commentary says it like this: Adam’s condition was now one of death, but his wife thereby attained a higher value in his sight. Through her alone could human life be continued. And the woman’s seed was obtained who was to raise up the man from his fall. While then, woman’s punishment consists in the multiplication of her Sorrow and conception, she becomes thereby only more precious to man. Adam turns from his own punishment to look upon her with more tender love. He has no word for her of reproach, So he turns to her and calls her Chavvah, his life, his compensation for his loss, and the antidote for the sentence of death.
Marriage tip. Like Adam, to focus less on my career or way of providing and more on the Value of my wife,
I look at the dignity restored to Eve at this moment. Even in a broken world, she is the bearer of the future. What a divine act of Grace. To restore this couple’s peace of mind.
Lesson: How do I/we find Eve, the life bearing potential in our own difficult seasons? I believe It’s a call to look at our current struggles and choose to name the hope we see rather than just the pain we feel.
Lesson: We put on our helmet of salvation through Jesus Christ. Which is the assurance and knowledge of our salvation through Christ our eternal hope.
Lesson: Sin always has consequences, and others close to us can be affected by our sinful ways.
Bensons Commentary on Genesis 3:15 states that. (that is, her offspring, first and principally CHRIST, who, with respect to this promise, it termed, by way of eminence, her seed,)
Benson Commentary, Gives us two possibilities to the naming of Eve.
A. If Adam named Eve himself, by his observation in the promise given to her, it was an instance of His faith in the word of God.
B. If this name were given to her by divine direction, it was an instance of God’s favor. Similar to the renaming of Abraham and Sarah, it was a seal of the covenant, and an assurance to them, that, notwithstanding their sin, he had not reversed that blessing wherewith he had blessed them. Be fruitful and multiply. Likewise a confirmation of the promise now made, that the seed of the woman, of this woman, should break the serpent’s head.
Lesson: I believe it is both faith and favor. Why? It took faith for Adam to commit to naming his wife Eve because of what he heard from the Lord, and it was God’s divine favor upon them to offer life through them.
Genesis 3:21
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
First observation. Because of Sin and shame, now the absence of innocence. God did clothe Adam and Eve. Interestingly God will once again clothe mankind with righteousness.
Lesson. God made the very first sacrifice to clothe mankind. God provided the animal skins and clothed them.
Benson commentary, Of beasts slain either to show them what death is, or rather, as is more probable, in sacrifice to God, to prefigure the great sacrifice which, in the latter days, should be offered once for all. The first animal that died was a sacrifice, or Christ in a figure.
Matthew Henry’s commentary. Clothes came in with sin. God named the man, and called him Adam, which signifies red earth; Adam named the woman, and called her Eve, that is life. Adam bears the name of the dying body, Eve of the living soul.
Barnes: a suitable covering. Durable protection. Such is the righteousness of Christ, therefore put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ.
Lesson. Covering demands sacrifice, meaning that Christ sacrificed himself for us. We naturally continue to try and cover our sin.
Lesson. Peace comes by allowing God to cover us by his sacrifice on the cross.
In closing of these two scripture verses, we see and can relate to the seasons of our own lives. God’s love for us is eternal and our trust in his word is as important now as it was then. Obey and trust.
Prayer: Lord God, I thank you for your graciousness, thank you for everything you have done, then and now. Lord, thank you for the gift of life today, the breath I am able to breathe. Thank you for clothing those who believe with Christ Jesus.
